Milford Haven is a town in the county of Pembrokeshire, Wales. The Welsh name Aberdaugleddau means ‘mouth of the two Rivers Cleddau’. The town is located on the north side of the Milford Haven Waterway – the largest estuary in Wales – forming one of the world’s deepest natural harbours. As a result, Milford Haven has been used as a port since the Middle Ages with everything from passenger liners to fishing fleets a key part of the the past of this town.

The history of Milford Haven can be dated back the days of the Vikings in 854 when chieftain Hubba and his navy of 23 ships took refuge in the Haven. This isn’t the only point in time where Milford Haven has been used in campaigns with Richard II launching his attacks on Ireland in 1399.

Milford Haven’s history continues to fascinate with the town being founded by Sir William Hamilton in 1790 and originally intended to be a whaling centre. By 1800 though, it was developing as a Royal Navy dockyard for 14 years before once again changing to a commercial dock after transferring to Pembroke in 1814. In the 1960s, the town’s port had become the fourth largest in the UK (handing over 30 million tonnes of cargo every year) following the building of an oil refinery with Milford Haven even now continuing to play a key role in the United Kingdom’s energy sector. It now has several oil refineries as well as one of the largest liquefied natural gas terminals in the world.

Within the county of Pembrokeshire, Milford Haven is the one of the most populous with plenty of activities and attractions to see and do.

The Milford Waterfront is lined with places to eat and shops to explore. Whether you’re looking for beauty and wellbeing, homemade chocolates or some locally sourced fish, Milford Waterfront has you covered. You’ll even find galleries selling local works of art. Those wanting a break from shopping will also find a bowling alley and indoor play area for kids. Or for those eager to learn a little more on the history of Milford Haven, the Milford Haven Museum can be located in the old whale oil storage building – in fact one of the oldest buildings in town.

Think of the Milford Marina as the gateway to adventure, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park ripe for exploration just outside. Not only that, it provides great access to outstanding sailing up the Milford Haven Waterway or along the coastline.

Located on the west side of Milford Haven, Fort Hubberstone is a Grade II listed building. It belongs to a number of forts built as an inner line of defence of the Haven. With Popton Fort on the opposite shore, the pair provided a wide range of fire and acted as the last line of defence before enemy would reach the Royal Naval dockyard. Construction took over three years and was completed in 1863. While it isn’t open for the public to visit, a new investor purchased the site promising to open the location as a ‘living ruin’.

Excellent service

Excellent service, very helpful consultation and delivery and installation went without a hitch (unusual for us, there’s normally issues with anything we do!). Had it a few days and so far so good, love the experience.
