Gower (or the Gower Peninsula) is located in the southwest of Wales and is in fact the most westerly part of the historic county of Glamorgan. It is right on the doorstep of Swansea and no more than an hour drive from Wales capital Cardiff. In the year 1956, the majority of Gower became the first area in the United Kingdom to be elected an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Gower was first administered as a rural area, but later merged with the county borough of Swansea in 1974 and until 1996 formed the Swansea district.

Gower measures in at about 70 square miles area-wise and is said to play host to over 1,200 archaeological sites that include Medieval castles and Neolithic stone circles. It is also known for its coastline that prove very popular with outdoor enthusiasts and walkers. Surfers too are often spotted riding the waves here. However, the remote location means Gower is perfect for those after a more crowd-free option when it comes to breaks away. Its varied landscape includes the aforementioned beaches and cliff paths along the south coast while the north coast features salt marches that lead into the Loughor Estuary.

The village of Mumbles is often referred to as ‘the Gateway to the Gower Peninsula’ and has a lot to offer its visitors. The beach is a mix of sand and rocks making it a top location for rockpools packed with crabs and tiny fish aplenty. The views of Swansea Bay off the beach are truly spectacular while Mumbles Pier houses great entertainment, food and drink. The pier itself has been around since 1898.

The coastline of Gower includes twenty beaches that offer a mix of stunning sandy paradises such as Whiteford Sands, Rhossili Bay and Oxwich Bay to private coves hidden away amongst limestone cliffs. Each of these coastal areas offers more than just sand, pebbles and water, Oxwich Bay for example is itself a lovely village with camping sites and Oxwich Castle, a Grade I listed castle that funnily enough isn’t actually a castle but rather a Tudor manor house. The towering structure overlooks Oxwich Bay.

Rhossili Bay meanwhile is a must visit, the beach voted Wales’ best in 2018 and 3rd in the whole of the UK in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards. In fact, the awards continue to come in. It’s three miles of sandy shore encompasses Worms Head, which stretches out to sea becoming an island when the tide comes in. Be sure to bring a camera to capture the beauty of this area.

Take in a spot of golf at Fairwood Park Golf Club. It’s the only ‘Championship’ status golf course in the Gower Peninsula, hosting not one but two Welsh PGA Championships. Interestingly the clubhouse was once a secret RAF hospital during World War II. If golf is perhaps not your scene and you’re after something a little more adventurous, then Gower caters with Gower Kite Riders offering power kiting, kite land boarding, kite buggying and kitesurfing.

Great local company!

Excellent service. When I rang them to explain my hot tub needed a good clean they not only told me they had a deal on they also had someone round to my house the very next morning.

Excellent service

Excellent service, very helpful consultation and delivery and installation went without a hitch (unusual for us, there’s normally issues with anything we do!). Had it a few days and so far so good, love the experience.
