Cardiff is the capital city of Wales as well as a county. The official name is the City and County of Cardiff and it’s the eleventh-largest city in the United Kingdom. Cardiff itself is the hub for the Senedd (Welsh Parliament), a majority of national cultural institutions and also the Welsh media. In terms of population, the 2011 census estimated the unitary authority area at 346,000 while the wider urban area figure rises to 479,000.

Interestingly, in 2011 National Geographic magazine named Cardiff as the sixth top alternative tourist destinations in the world. In fact, Cardiff is the most popular visitor location in Wales with 2017 seeing over 21 million people visit.

Cardiff Castle is a major heritage attraction located right in the centre of the capital within beautiful parklands. The location was once a Roman fort, Norman castle and Victorian Gothic palace with the fairy-tale looking towers and tall castle walls you see today concealing 2,000 years of history. In the nineteenth century, art/architect William Burges undertook the reconstruction of the castle leading to some of the most significant Victorian interiors in Britain featuring elaborate wood carvings, murals and stained glass. It’s a truly memorable attraction and ranks top of any visitor’s must-do list.

If you time your visit right, you can check out the Wales national rugby union team in action at the state-of-the-art Principality Stadium (previously known as the Millennium Stadium). The stadium also hosts Wales national football team games. Featuring a fully retractable roof, remarkable Press Conference Suite and an official VIP Hospitality Suite there it’s well worth taking a behind the scenes tour of all levels the stadium has to offer. Walk down the entrance tunnel and hear the boom of 74.000 loud fans or make your way to the President’s Box, an area normally reserved for royalty. Principality Stadium has been described by WRU as “the best rugby venue in the world”, and it’s not hard to see why.

The Cardiff Bay area is another popular tourist spot with plenty to offer. One hundred years ago, Cardiff made its money in exports of Welsh coal shipping millions of tonnes all over the globe. As the coal industry declined, the old dockyards fell into disuse. Following redevelopment of the area however, Cardiff Bay is now alive once more with everything from places to eat and drink, hotels, amazing views of the vibrant waterfront and the Cardiff International White Water adventure facility for those after an activity packing a little more adrenaline-like white water rafting.

The Wales Millennium Centre opened in 2004 but even in such a short space of time has already established itself as one of the world’s most iconic arts and cultural destinations. The amazing exterior alone with its calligraphy inscription covering the front of the building leaves quite the strong first impression. The inscription is two poetic lines written by Welsh poet Gwyneth Lewis in the Welsh and English languages. The building has even appeared in multiple episodes of Dr. Who. Of course, the venue plays host to a number of blockbuster West End musicals, ballet, stand up, opera, art exhibitions, bars and restaurants and more.

Excellent service

Excellent service, very helpful consultation and delivery and installation went without a hitch (unusual for us, there’s normally issues with anything we do!). Had it a few days and so far so good, love the experience.
